may he rest in peace

  • May. 28th, 2007 at 3:34 PM

last night the screech owl that we'd been force feeding died.

Alsosaturday nina came back and we had a sort of meeiting. so much has happened in the last couple of days that its hard to remember.

i've learned that you cant give rabbits any type of penicilin because theeyy will die.  this includes amoxicilin.

Alright fourth day and counting.

today we got a new batch of babies.
5 baby  flickers and a baby screech owl.

for the first time i tube fed a dove. it was really scary specially takign into account what happened with the possum. I think thats sort of the reasong why i want to keep buddha. She was aspirated and clicks really bad, and i feel like i have to take care of her like i didnt take care of the opposum. then again i think that i may just be imprinting her and then not have enough time to care for her like she deserves when she grows up. also i feel sort of bad about taking her freedom away when she could technically be a free bird.

I had to force feed the baby flickers and crow and bunnies. We have a baby screeech that is not eating on its own and is possibly dehydrated. We felt its keel and it looks preety bad (i'm still having dificulties with this rating system). We gave it fluids, force fed it a bit of mouse and he is now on a liquid diet.

also one of the fledgings just keeled over dead. He hadnt been eating (wouldnt open his mouth when we tried to feed him) and so he basically strarved himself to death.

what is this? 3rd day?

i fed my first bunny today. those things are hard as heck. you litterally have to attack them with the food and/or trick them into eating.

i also was taught to use an axe. however that didnt go too well.

Savanah showed up finally and with her she brought a butload of babies with her.

a baby crow- who refuses to eat.
a baby wren- about the size of my thumb
2 ferrets
a fledging robin
5 baby bunnies.

the bunny that we rescued yesterday died overnight. she'd been living in a dryer vent and was incredibly thin, dehydrated, and her fur was peeling apart. at least she's in peace now.

i'm highly debating wether or not to keep my baby starling. She's from an invasive species, but i dont think i have the time to dedicate to her and playing with her and what not.  we'll see.

first two days

  • May. 21st, 2007 at 11:02 PM

Alright so i just started the internship at the rehab center. Today was my second day of "hell week" (even though we're not supposed to call it that). It includes working for 12 hours a day, for a whole week.

8 Am- 8pm
it involves feeding baby birds every half hour. that's a total of 24 feedings a day.
we feed them a special formula (note to self, figure out what its called) from 8-10 am, 12-2 pm, and 6-8 pm
then during the other times we feed them soaked meal worms.

I feel a little insecure about feeding them because i'm always afraid that i wont go down their throats enough and they'll end up aspirating. It is because of that same reason (along with the opposum incident) that i'm afraid to tube-feed the doves. However i'm not as afraid to handle the hawks. that may, however, be because we have smaller ones inside (not the red-tails). Right now we have Apolo, and Zeus. I cant remember their species although i did earlier today.

today we also bathed Virginia opposums because they've got lice, scabies (possibly) and neon green poop. We dont exactly know whats causing it, but it if keeps happening we will have to send for a fecal sample.

In other news, i am now the proud momma of a baby starling. Starlings are very competitive in the wild, perhaps even bullies. Thats why we're allowed to imprint them. Basically i will be the only person to feed my baby so that it will think it is a human and i'm its mother. I cant wait.
